History

D.C. Wolfe Charter School is a public school and is part of the Macon County School system. From 1997 through School Year 2025-26, the school operated as D.C. Wolfe Elementary School. In 2024,  a group of citizens, led by the Mayor and Town Council of Shorter, Alabama, sought to convert the school to a charter school. Many leaders and citizens in Macon County saw a need for a public school of academic excellence that offered career-connected pathways. So, they petitioned the Macon County Board of Education under Alabama law to become a conversion charter school. Later that year, the Board of Education approved the school to operate as a conversion charter school beginning in the Fall of 2026.

As a conversion charter school, D.C. Wolfe Charter School will be governed by an independent governing board. Macon County Schools serves as the authorizer of the school.
